Now, I know weddings are a traditional way of saying let’s eat food!!! But this ritual of Bengali weddings is really amazing. Because it involves treating the bride and the groom with delicious food. Amazing right?? Many of you must not be knowing this ritual. In this ritual, the groom and the bride gets an invitation from their relatives to come and have good food. So, basically, the bride and the groom get to eat their favorite dishes before they tie a knot. This is their last meal of bachelorhood. I must tell you this ritual is my Bengali friend’s personal favorite. And why not he is a Bhukadh!!!

2. The Tatwa Ritual
Pronounced ‘Tawtto’ in Bengali. It is an array of gifts that are exchanged between both the families. The key feature of these gifts is impressive sculptures made entirely of Sandesh. And even, fish! Yep, you read it right, these gifts are ready to eat materials. And when it’s a fish who wouldn’t want to eat them right away!!! An interesting thing here is these gifts are in the form of groom and bride. They look super cute and they are super tasty even! And this is a tradition where creative minds can showcase their creativity and bring out the best Tatwa design.

Now, this ritual was the one which I was waiting to hear about because of the Ulu dhvani excitement. So, in this ritual, the bride hides her face with paan leaves and her brother lifts her up to the stage. This is one ritual to which our cutie Bengali bride gets the maximum teasing from her brothers. Because in this the brothers have to lift her up. Bride’s face gets decorated with intricate designs of sandalwood paste. This has a religious meaning as sandalwood keeps her calm and energetic. The bride and groom exchange garlands before sitting before the priest.
It is really similar to application of Haldi in Hindu weddings. But in Bengali weddings, this ritual is Gaye Halud. Interestingly, in this ritual, the bride sits on a Piri or a plank and everyone rubs Haldi on her face. This turmeric paste is usually applied by the married women of the house while singing. After this only, the bride wears Shakha Paula, which is special bangles made of shell and coral. This is similar to wearing choodha. And most of our bong beauties get emotional at this point as now they are all set to leave their parental house.

After the wedding ceremony, the groom stays a night at the wedding venue or the bride’s home. A group of cousins and friends from both sides keep the couple awake. This is the time where our beautiful bridesmaid’s role becomes really important. Their job is to keep the couple entertained all night with jokes, songs and chit chat.
So, these were some of the sacred Bengali wedding’s rituals that I found it to be really amazing.
